Vernon, 18, lives in Avondale with his family and is graduating from Fairfax School this June.
For the past three years, as part of his community service for school, Vernon has volunteered every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Hyde Park Center for Older Adults. The Center serves lunch every day, so Vernon sets the tables and clears them when lunch is over.
"Everyone at the Center knows Vernon," said his teacher, Marsha Gordon. "He loves coming here for lunch."
In addition to his duties at the Center, Vernon collects laundry from each room at school and sorts attendance sheets into teacher mailboxes.
A social butterfly, Vernon gets a "Kelly pass," which allows him to visit one of his favorite people, Kelly Hansen, the school's Educational Administrator, if he finishes errands in 15 minutes.
Like most teenagers, Vernon loves looking up funny videos on YouTube, sports, music, and eating, especially barbeque chips.
"If Vernon doesn't like what's on the lunch menu at the center, he always has barbeque chips just in case!" said Marsha.
After Spring Break, Vernon will go to Goodwill instead of the Center to train for a job after graduation.
