General Assembly Inc.
In 1973, Work Activity Centers of Hamilton County, Inc. was formed as the non-profit corporation to serve as the employer of individuals in the workshops operated by theAdult Services division of the Hamilton County Board of Mental Retardation. It also handled all business operations, including sales, customer billing and employee payroll.
In the late 1970's, the Board, faced with a rapidly growing workforce, determined that it needed new facilities in order to meet the needs of enrollees. Further, there was a need to provide efficient workplaces in order to provide a broader range of services to an increasingly diverse customer base.
In 1979, Beckman Adult Center and Jackson Adult Center were opened. These were followed by the opening of the Franks Adult Center in 1981, the Northside Adult Center in 1985 (subsequently closed in 1998), and the Kidd Adult Center in 1988.
In 1989, the organization was changed their name to General Assembly, Inc., and has been going strong since.
